Gratefully acknowledging the many volunteers who dedicate their time, talents, and energy to make a difference in the community. |
I hope everyone has been enjoying the summer. This morning on my way to work, I noticed some leaves had fallen off a tree. What a reminder that fall is right around the corner. We will be receiving requests from clients who will need assistance with yard cleanup in October. Raking leaves and preparing garden beds can be an excellent group activity for teambuilding and fellowship. If you are a member of a group such as your work, Sunday School Class, Scouts, Rotary, Lions, or anything and you’d like to schedule a day or half day of service please let Ashley (acarney@heartsandhandsfia.org) or Andrea (aaldrich@heartsandhands.org) know and we’ll get you scheduled for some impactful work!
I am looking forward to celebrating our volunteers at our upcoming picnic. We will need a good headcount for food, so if you haven’t RSVP’d, please do! You can bring one guest with you; I promise you won’t want to miss it this year! We have some fantastic entertainment lined up for you.
For our community members who live in Eastern Erie, we will be in Alden for a coffee hour in August. I look forward to connecting with folks and thanking you for all the amazing work that you are doing to help your neighbors live more independently.
Last month I received several calls from care receivers who told me how amazing you all were for helping them. One mentioned that her volunteers were worth their weight in gold. I couldn’t agree more, it takes a special person to volunteer with Hearts and Hands. Not only are you giving of your time, but you’re opening personal space of your vehicle and your heart to help your neighbors out. Truly, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Our board and staff are inspired daily by your kind actions.
Your neighbor,
Aaron Carlson

Boy Scout Volunteer in Akron |
Brodie needed to volunteer to earn a badge for his boy scout troop, and so he looked for ways that he could volunteer in his community. Hearts & Hands was able to assist Brodie in finding some great opportunities to do yardwork in Akron, along with his father Derek supervising him. Both Brodie and Derek were able to help four of our care receivers in the community of Akron. Some benefits of getting someone at Brodie’s age to volunteer include developing new communication and career-related skills, improved attitudes toward older adults, and the development of meaningful relationships and friendships. Brodie had some things to say about his experience volunteering with Hearts & Hands “This opportunity to volunteer with Hearts & Hands has allowed me to learn how to do some basic yardwork including weed whacking, and mowing.”
